About Us

The Special Needs Initiative for Growth (otherwise known as INGA) is a non-governmental organization in Nigeria aimed at creating awareness and providing capacity based training using technology for persons with disability (Down Syndrome, visual impairment, Autism and Cerebral Palsy) to ensure they are better placed to live a sustainable life and contribute to the society.

We leverage education technology, rehabilitative technologies, policy, advocacy, mentorship, capacity building, health support services, career development and entrepreneurship to promote and sustain the social and economic wellbeing and rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

Our mission is providing total empowerment tools and resources that promote education, human rights, health approaches and career development channels for persons with disabilities in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

Our vision is to be the leading disability service organization connecting persons with disabilities in appropriate socio-economic services.

Our People

Our Focus Areas

We focus on demand-driven IT entrepreneurship and career development to enable persons with disabilties access employment or self-employment, after which they are mentored, supported to secure an internship or job, or given a small grant to start a business. Learning materials are converted into Easy Read format for trainees with disabilities. Special needs educators are trained in the same subjects so that they can transfer skills to persons with disabilities. Some of our focus areas include:

Inclusive Education

We ensure that there is an inclusive learning opportunity for students with disabilities to learn side by side with students without disabilities so that students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers can improve their quality of life through STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics) , Robotics, Therapy, and other career practices which will, in turn, foster their self-reliance and prepare them for employment.

Health management

Individuals living with special needs are provided various therapy services, health screenings and psychological benefits.

Social disability advocates

The team works with local government and stakeholders to further disability rights through social change and public policy.

Career development

In addition to career development projects for the special needs community, the organization verifies that employers hire and retain special needs adults to promote an inclusive system. Disability awareness – we create awareness about disabilities. We also give caregivers or parents the knowledge required to care for someone with disabilities.

Entrepreneurship

After participating in empowerment projects, young adults with disabilities have their performances assessed. We help to train the trainees invest in their skills through entrepreneurship. Also, low-income mothers of children with disabilities are provided capacity building training in financial and digital marketing skills. The impact is enabling the mothers become financially literate in order to manage the greater financial risks that they face in their families and communities.

Career Development

We provide capacity building workshops for employers of labour to motivate employers to hire accessibility related business settings for persons with disabilities in the workplace. Our work is also helping to train and build the capacity of persons with disability in good communication, leadership, teamwork, adaptability, accommodations for productive working output, digital literacy, Internet entrepreneurship, PWDs labor rights and other relevant career practices related to individual goals so that they acquire the requisite skills needed for them to create or attain jobs in the job market with employers. Our work is also promoting the mainstreaming of disability, giving employers of labour and PWDs an opportunity to become role models in respecting, supporting and celebrating human diversity. it also aligns to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 8, which is reducing inequalities and providing access to equal employment opportunities.

Policy

We partner with government and intergovernmental agencies and allies to develop and implement strategies and protocols in support and defense of the rights of persons with disabilities based on the Africa Union’s Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa.

Ezenwa Eleazar Okoro

Chairman(Board of Trustees)

Ezenwa Okoro has over eight years of experience in the community and youth development sector. Currently, he is the President of Enugu Youth Entrepreneurship Network (E-YEN), where he focuses on designing, initiating and implementing youth entrepreneurship development activities. He is also the CEO of Oxygen Resources Industrial Ventures and Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Small Scale Industrialists (NASSI) Enugu State Chapter. He was appointed Consultant to the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor on Youth Development and Mobilization. Ezenwa is an alumni of the Galilee International Management Institute Israel (GIMI) and Entrepreneurship Development Centre of the Pan Atlantic University (EDC-PAU).

Racheal Inegbedion

Vice Chair (Board) and Founding Executive Director

Racheal Inegbedion has over 8 years of experience in Disability Advocacy, Policy and Youth & Development issues. Currently, Racheal is the Founding Executive Director of the Special Needs Initiative For Growth (SNIG), a non-Governmental organisation focused on empowering persons with disabilities through the provision of resources and practical programs for living a meaningful life. She is a 2021 Mandela Washington Fellow, a program of the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and administered by the International Research & Exchanges Board.

Racheal is a 2021 Global Exchange on Religion in Society Fellow by the European Union External Action. She was recognised by the United Nations Secretary-General Envoy on Youth as one of the 10 young leaders inspired to change the world during the COVID-19 crisis. Racheal has been featured on the technology news of the Voice of America and Google Chrome as a “Google Leaptaker” for using STEM and Robotics to empower youths with disabilities in Africa. Rose Ekaete Mordi

Board Member

Rose Ekaete Mordi, a British trained business Administrator. Founder/ President, Down syndrome Foundation Nigeria an NGO that caters for children/adults with Down syndrome in Nigeria other West African countries. The Association/Foundation was established primarily to care for children with Down syndrome in four core areas: Educational, Vocational, Medical and Social Integration. The Foundation has recorded great achievements under her leadership: sponsoring many children overseas for medical procedures; organized Seminars locally and internationally, participated in Special Olympics International games, Educational & vocational training for people with Down syndrome, awareness creation and advocacy. She co-initiated the Save-a-life project; The Save-a-life Project (SALP) is a charity ancillary to/associated with the Down syndrome Foundation.
A spokesperson and advocate for people with intellectual disability, Chairperson of Africa Down syndrome Network (ADSN) and a Trustee in various charities/clubs, Mrs. Mordi have received several awards (locally and internationally) in recognition of her contribution to the less privileged in the society. She is totally committed to changing the negative societal mindset in the African society towards people with disability and relentless in her effort to give the less privileged a chance to contribute effectively to, and be appreciated by the Society.

Omowonuola Akintunde

Executive Secretary and Financial Director of the Board

She Is Chief Financial Officer of Kachifo Books in Lagos State Nigeria. She Combines Operational And Strategic Roles In Establishing Financial Control For A Profitable Long Term Goal. Asides Her Financial Acumen, She is Also The Financial Director Of The Special Needs Initiative For Growth.

Amdi Salam

Creative and Communications Director

Amdi is a human capital developer and creative director for the Special Needs Initiative for Growth. He is the founder of Sharkbite foods, an organization that produces healthy and organic superfoods like Baobab, Tigernut and Date Powder. He has worked at Deloitte as an Analyst, he is currently a human capital development professional in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). He enjoys creating sustainable impact using creative arts, technology and entrepreneurship for the uplift of persons with special needs.
